Do you that feeling of been used that you get when you expect to be rewarded by an individual you helped or supported, and you are not? What if I told you, that it was so selfish self pushing against your Goodwill.
When you help, you are assisting something or a situation towards a goal. As long as your act contributes even in the tiniest way to achieving the goal, you should be ecstatic. That is mission accomplished.
But the selfish part of you would sit out, with a self justifying sense of entitlement, expecting a payback for your help. If you do get a payback, then you have not been helpful. You merely traded you time, knowledge or support for theirs and as such, you would sit on your high chair of entitlement till the day you decide that you have been paid back.
You see this subtle sense of entitlement has attained many relationships, not because the other person is ungrateful but they can't comprehend your sense of entitlement. Fact is sometimes, they had a backup if you didn't step up to be relevant. Nature is like that, if you don't do your part, life would continue and you would fade into oblivion with it.
In helping others, you actually helped yourself gain relevance as well, this is why most world religions would tell you service to humanity gives one of the best feelings in the world.
It's not hard, help out someone you felt was ungrateful before, support someone who has no influence in your circle, invite your juniors to events hosted by you. Practice all these and watch the tides change along with people's perceptions about you
