When we are young we sometimes trade the treasure of our future for the pleasure of the day. We do not realize that we become who we are by the choices we make.
Making wise choices is hard at any age in a person's life.
So how is a young man to know what he should choose?
The first thing any Christian should do when faced with a decision is ask God's advice.
Proverbs 3:5-6 says: {Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.}
So a person must not only seek God's advice and wisdom but also be receptive to it. (Do what He says.)
When we are young we do not give a thought about our tomorrow; we think we have all the time in the world.
So God speaks to us in Psalm 90:12 {Teach us to number our days, so that we may gain a heart of wisdom.}
In our minds we do not perceive that there may not be a tomorrow.
But Matthew 6:19-20 says: {"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.}
We should all be like king David as he spoke in Psalm 86:11 {Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.}
And God promises us in Psalm 32:8 {I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.}
So to answer the question, "How is a young man to know what he should choose?" The answer is the same for all of us; stay in the word of God and seek His will in all matters.
For me I say as did Joshua in 24:15b {But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord."}
