I thought the trees were all cottonwoods, honestly.
A band of trees crowd the banks of the creek that runs through the park behind our house.
Cottonwoods, right?
As I learned yesterday—in my mission to learn more about my bioregion—yes, there are cottonwoods. But there are also white willows and peachleaf willows and black poplar and box elder.
A part of me resists the practice of a nature walk with smartphone in hand. But the plant finder app I've been using gives me pause on that rule of engagement. Looking up trees and plants on the app actually deepened my enjoyment of the stroll.
Technology, I'm reminded, is not the problem. It's how we use that technology. Scrolling Internet articles out on a nature walk? Not so good. Looking up tree names? Well, that seems a little different.
