Dealing with Difficulties Timidity
2 Timothy 1 verse 7 "For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of
power, of love and of self-discipline". Other versions say that God has not given
us a 'spirit of fear (or cowardice) '; but rather "a spirit of power, love, and a
sound mind".
Some may shrink back from involvement in ministry or even sharing their faith;
thinking that they don't have the right temperament/personality. Maybe you
are quiet and shy, and think you need to be bold like Peter or Paul, to be an
effective minister of the Gospel.
The truth is that our Lord and Friend has called each one of us, with our own
personalities and life experiences, and He 'fashions our hearts individually'.
Each of us has a sphere of influence where our testimony is able to help
another person and give glory to our Lord and Saviour. We overcome 'by the
Blood of the Lamb and the word of our testimony'.
It has been suggested that one way to overcome timidity is to practice speaking
out in a group where you feel safe, where you are already accepted and begin
to pray or share your faith. Each time we step out, facing our fears, fear loses
its power over us.
Romans 6 verses 16 to 18 ESV "do you not know that if you present yourselves
to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either
of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?".
These verses tell us that whatever we consistently yield ourselves to will have
power over us.
Jesus Christ came to bring us freedom and life in abundance, peace and joy,
power and truth. So let's not yield to timidity since we have been set free from
the power of sin, through the power of the cross and the shed blood of Jesus.
Let's - yield to the Holy Spirit, Who empowers us to live in love, and to have a
sound mind; bring our thoughts into submission to our Lord and Friend and to
what His word says about us; present our bodies as a living sacrifice to our
Lord and Saviour, which is our reasonable service of worship. God is for you.
