Dealing with Difficulties – Stubbornness
Proverbs 12 verses 15 and 16 "A stubborn fool considers his own way the right one, but a
person who listens to advice is wise. 16. When a stubborn fool is irritated, he shows it
immediately, but a sensible person hides the insult".
Sometimes stubbornness can be a defense mechanism. If you often felt powerless as a
child, you may have become stubborn as a way of defending yourself and ensuring your
needs are met. So we see stubbornness is often a sign of insecurity. To be stubborn means
you resist any help or any attempt to change your course of action or way of thinking.
In the bible a couple of people who were initially stubborn were Moses and Jonah. The Lord
had given them both an assignment, but Moses initially said, "send someone else", and
Jonah went in the opposite direction to where the Lord was directing him.
However, we can be encouraged that when they both humbled themselves and submitted to
the Lord's call, Moses ended up delivering God's people out of slavery with mighty signs and
wonders and display of God's power; and Jonah, when he obeyed, saw the whole city of
Nineveh was saved. Also these occurred under the Old Covenant – which has now been
made obsolete, and a New Covenant in the blood of our Lord Jesus Christ has been
established; – a new a better covenant with better promises – Jesus Christ being our great
High Priest, as described in the book of Hebrews.
Stubbornness has it's roots in pride, and because of this, it's ultimately a spiritual problem.
Under the new covenant, we are no longer slaves to sin (Romans 6) but free to live in the
Kingdom of God, in righteousness, peace and joy. Jesus, our Lord and Friend, is our
Intercessor and Advocate before the Father; we don't need to fear or fight to be heard; we
are accepted in the Beloved.
May you enter His rest as you keep yourselves in the love of God.
