"I'd always wanted a bigger family, with grandparents who lived nearby and cousins and aunts and uncles. My own family is about as tiny as they come. My mother was an only child, and my father had one sister who didn't have kids," admits Julia Williamson. So she was delighted to marry into a sprawling family. "When our marriage started to break down, I was happy to have my ex's family so close. Somehow I thought this would make things easier. It did not." And today she's talking about how that played out.
Our own Sarah Aswell recently chatted with comedian and SNL alum Ana Gasteyer, who has two kids, 21 and 16. And she shared some great tips for long car trips with teens, specifically: books on tape. "One that went really well was Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. When the kids were pre-teens, we did that with my parents — and my parents loved it. Everybody was kind of in it together. And Holes is another one like that — everybody can gather around and get hooked into the story." Check it out.
