Fruit of the Spirit Gentleness
Gentleness is the 8th fruit of the Spirit mentioned in Galatians 5:22and 23.
Gentleness is the quality or characteristic of being kind, tender, mild-
mannered, compassionate, and considerate. To be gentle means showing love
and care for others in how you act and speak. To have gentleness is to have a
gentle spirit or nature about you. Gentleness has been described as 'bridled
strength'.
In Matthew chapter 11 verse 29, Jesus says that He is gentle (meek) and
humble (lowly) in heart. He encourages us to come and learn from Him, and
we will find rest for our souls. We all want rest for our souls.
Proverbs 15:1,4 (The Living Translation) tells of the power of gentleness in our
words "a gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger";
And, verse 4 "gentle words are a tree of life, a deceitful tongue crushes the
spirit".
James chapter 3 verse 17 " Godly wisdom is pure, peace loving and gentle at all
times, willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds. It shows no
favoritism and is always sincere." Here we see an aspect of Godly wisdom is
gentleness; and again in Ephesians chapter 6 verse 1 we are exhorted "if
another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently
and humbly help that person back onto the right path."
Gentleness is beneficial to us so our souls can find rest. It is of benefit to
others as it creates a bridge for believers and unbelievers alike, to find grace
and courage to be reconciled and restored.
Let's yield to our Lord and Friend, allowing Him to continually cultivate
gentleness in our lives daily. As we experience His gentle nature towards us,
we can freely give to others.
God bless
Kath
