I celebrated my 19th birthday (28th of June) in Zanzibar, Tanzania, a staggeringly beautiful city populated by a warm Swahili culture.
Most of the 3 days were spent in the serene and therapeutic resort – Sea Cliff. We went kayaking, saw horses in the beach, played Top Golf, and made some adorable sea creature friends – sea cucumbers, urchins, and baby crabs to name a few :).
Horsies in the beach
Fun Fact: Zanzibar literally translates to "Land of the Blacks". When we were at the beach during low tide evenings, we always saw the most compassionate villagers who helped us find sea animals and told us interesting facts about them. It is from them I learnt that sea urchins never mean to harm us. They are our friends. It is only when a person accidentally steps on one when their sting stings hard!
Our 2 lovely friends who hail from the Tanzanian Villages
Me falling in love with a sea cucumber – they're the friendliest, most gentle little creatures .

Also celebrated Eid
Then we visited Stone Town, the historic town within Zanzibar city. It is, in fact, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which combines elements of African, Arab, Indian, and European styles. The narrow streets, friendly people, luscious mangoes, and ancient spice markets made the experience so very wholesome.
Another Fun Fact: Freddie Mercury, the legendary singer of Queen, was born in the heart of this town. Most of us remember him by his powerful words, "I won't be a rockstar. I will be a legend." Indeed he became one!
The villagers' boats
It made my heart happy to see so many feminist paintings, and we were so lucky to be able to meet and speak to the creators of these enchanting artworks.
Birthday Night (with my twin!)
Tanzania follows the Islamic religion, where it says "If a man is greedy in acquiring things, he shall not possess the proximity of Allah". That's why I noticed that the people here are so happy with what they have despite having so little . They even celebrated Eid, so we treated ourselves with the most divine sweets. The food included mostly veggies, curries, rice, and breads.
And there we have it! It was a pleasure turning 19 in this hidden corner of the globe, complete with crystal waters, sandy beaches, amazing wildlife, and a diverse culture. I hope you also got to see and appreciate the glimpses of this beautiful city with me!
