Hello friends, I'm finally getting around to knitting my very first sweater. It is something I have wanted to do for years, but felt intimidated by. Even though I can knit socks and hats and other things, a sweater seemed too daunting. But I decided this was the year to do it! My mother in law makes sweaters so I knew she could help me if needed. Originally I found a vintage pattern I liked, and my mother in law agreed to help me find the right wool. So we drove to our favourite wool shop, and the sales person was going to help us figure out how much wool we needed to make a sweater in my size. We realized that pattern is out of print, and the specific wool used to knit that sweater is no longer available. The sales person suggested some newer patterns in a similar style, so I chose a new one (LINK here). It is designed to be knit with 2 strands of wool held together, to make a thicker strand. This gives the sweater a really nice texture. I could not decide between pink and orange for the colour, but the pink I wanted was on backorder, so I ended up with orange.
I read the pattern over very carefully to make sure I understood exactly what had to be done. I got all the different sizes of needles, and then had to look up how to knit in the round on circular needles, because I forgot! When I first read the pattern in the store, I decided to knit a size medium since that is what I always wear. But when I got home I measured some of my other clothes and decided to knit this sweater in a size small. It is supposed to be a loose fitting sweater, but I did not want it to be too baggy. Here are some photos of the progress so far.
I'm almost done the bodice now, just a few more inches to knit. And then I will knit the bottom hem in a ribbed stitch, like the collar. Speaking of that, it looks kind of like a turtleneck but it's a regular crew neck that needs to be rolled down and sewn into place. Once I finish the bodice I will work on the sleeves, which seem pretty easy. My goal is to have the sweater done in October, but I have not been knitting much the last few weeks.
Since I bought enough wool to make a size medium, but ended up doing a size small, I will have leftover wool. I think I might knit either a matching hat or matching socks! Which do you think I should knit?
