Chaplain's Chat
Have you ever heard someone say "Why did God let this happen?" or "Why didn't God do something to stop that?" or "Where was God when all that was going on?"
When tragedy strikes, or your health fails and your suffering seems endless and painful, do you feel distant from God, or that He is not around? How do we see Him in all that? What keeps us from turning away from Him? Well, I realized some time ago that if I am feeling distant from God, then it's not God that has moved, it's me.
He's the same today as yesterday, my great unchanging friend. He's the same today as yesterday, just the same unto the end. By His mighty power He holds me, in His arms of love enfolds me. He's the same today as yesterday, my great unchanging friend. Sidney Edward Cox (1887-1975)
In those times when I feel God is distant or not even there, it's helpful for me to reflect on all the times He has proved His faithfulness to me. God always keeps His promises. And to those who love Him and call on His name, He says, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." Hebrews 13:5. And Jeremiah 29:11 "For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, they are plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."
It's not always smooth sailing, in fact it can get pretty rough sometimes. God doesn't promise to take away the struggles, rather He will be there with us through them. It's that underlying confidence that God is there, giving us the strength and courage to keep going, even when we don't understand.
Thank You Lord for Your guiding Presence in our lives through the good times and the bad. Please give us comfort and peace in the fact that You are always with us. In Jesus Name. Amen.
