Poster for The Eiger Sanction
The new reality show 007: Road to a Million (probably unintentionally) evokes another spy movie: 1975's The Eiger Sanction.
The reality show includes a segment at the Eiger, a mountain in Switzerland. The same mountain was a key location in the 1975 film.
The movie was based on a novel by Rod Whitaker (1931-2005) under the name of Trevanian. Whitaker also was one of the screenwriters for the Eastwood movie. The star also directed The Eiger Sanction and it had a score by John Williams.
The story centers on Jonathan Hemlock, a professor and art collector who had been an assassin for the U.S. Hemlock goes back into service as a killer to avenge the death of a friend. His target apparently is a member of a group that will climb the Eiger.
The movie had an "R" rating and was bloodier than a lot of spy movies. Interestingly, there was a scene that plays out similarly to 2008's Quantum of Solace. Hemlock drives an opponent (Jack Cassidy) out to the middle of a desert and leaves him there, much like James Bond (Daniel Craig) does with Dominic Greene (Mathieu Amalric).
Like the reality show, The Eiger Sanction is available on Amazon Prime.
