The past three days went by way too quickly. The four hunters (3 with rifles and one with a camera) filled every single hour with activity. They were up by 4:30 a.m. and out the door by 5:00. They returned mid-morning for hot showers, breakfast and in some cases a nap. Following lunch, by 3:00 in the afternoon, they were out the door again, and we didn't see them again in the light of day.
I don't know how they kept up the pace. Of course, we also welcomed the inclusion of Andrea and Kevin for shared mealtimes. Incidentally, they never came through the door empty handed. Both enjoy meal preparation and they assisted in the preparing just the right thing for four hungry hunters.
Andrea also had a headful of seconded hand memories she has heard about "dear ole dad" that she brought up in conversation at the dinner table. I didn't need to be the laughingstock at the table, but I never mind being mentioned in a humorous light.
Of course, Leo Buscaglia, the college professor known as "Dr. Love" is credited with this observation: "If you act crazy consistently, you can get by with damn near anything; otherwise, they call the cops." That resonated with me the first time I heard it. The expression puts into words a good synopsis of my approach to life. I've gotten myself out of a lot of potential jams by employing the use of laughter.
Lunch plans for yesterday were Andrea's idea. Ever since Craig's family have been residents of Texas, they have often been in our neck of the woods on Jake's birthday. His birthday is December 28th. Years ago, when asked what kind of meal he wanted for his birthday, he answered Asian food. Consequently, that has become a family tradition.
Andrea and Kevin are not going to be in Texas to help celebrate Jake's birthday this year. Consequently, it was Andrea's idea that we celebrate his annual birthday lunch/dinner while they were here for the hunt. She also volunteered to make the cake.
Jake was more than a little surprised, and we all enjoyed the homemade Chinese food. It was good. In addition, there are no words to describe the cheesecake. I guess the closest expression is, "Wow! Wow! Wow!"
When the guys made their decision to pack their things with plans to return home after the afternoon hunt, I didn't see that coming. The decision made perfect sense, but it was one less evening we had to share.
The house is quiet today without them. On the bright side, there is leftover cheesecake.
All My Best!
Don
