We've chatted about mending before on this blog! Today's topic is near and dear to my heart. I have to confess to having a large mending pile right now, though, some of which I've needed to mend for quite a while. It's been patiently waiting on me to figure out each mend. The first of which is my fitted sheet.
We have a set of sheets that we love. They're soft and getting softer each time they're washed. They're so soft they're almost threadbare! I'm working to figure out the mend this time, because my fabric is so thin. I've come to the realization that the fitted sheet in particular may be recycled somewhat soon. I have ideas in my head about what it can become, but that's another post!
As you can see from the photo, I started out with a simple mend, sewing the two torn sides back together. What you're not able to see here is that the fabric would have torn again easily because it's so thin. This required some brainstorming on my part. I realized I would need to patch the tear from underneath with matching fabric. Where was I going to get matching fabric? I brainstormed about it and came up with replacing the pillowcases and using that as my mending fabric. It's enough mending fabric to last a few more tears. The cases were $5.99 for two at my local discount store, much less than I would pay for a new set of King size sheets.
My other mends are just as complex. One is a fleece jacket that needs underarm patches. My cashmere turtleneck needs mending under the arms as well. And I have a quilt that needs repair in several places. I will have to take it with me to shop in person for replacement fabric. See? I have been letting them stack up a bit, due to the complexity of each job. I aim to tackle them, though and get them finished!
What are you up to? Anything frugal? I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Stacy
