Jim Steranko provides a Sean Connery/007 cameo in Strange Tales No. 164 (1967)
Nov. 5 is Jim Steranko's 85th birthday. The artist-writer had a short career for Marvel Comics. He took over Nick Fury, Agent of SHIELD (created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby) and made it his own.
Steranko initially finished "breakdowns" (rough sketches and panels) by Kirby, beginning with Strange Tales No. 151. He eventually took flight as an artist and then took over the writing of the Fury stories.
On Sunday nights, Steranko entertains questions from fans on X (formerly Twitter). In 2017, during one of these sessions, Steranko said he was a big fan of the 1960s spy craze.
During his run on SHIELD, Steranko provided a one-panel cameo by the Sean Connery version of James Bond. An earlier story by Steranko had a SHIELD weapons expert named Boothroyd.
Steranko had a huge impact on comic book fans in the 1960s. With each issue, Steranko's art expanded. The art was helped as veteran artists such as Joe Sinnott and Frank Giacoia took over inking and made the art smoother.
Steranko moved on to other ventures in 1968. But those who read his stories still remember them.
Happy birthday, Jim.
