Gardens are always "works in progress". Just when you think you are done, something comes along, and the face of your garden changes again, a testament that gardens are living, breathing things.
Since our shift to our new home, the garden has undergone many movements and facelifts with additions, some subtractions, and a whole lot of elevation happening around.
Yet, the garden is not completed yet.
While it is hard, constant work, the physical and mental benefits have been enormous, and pleasing to the eye. At least, I hope so.
The best way to ensure the success of the work of your hands, is to grow a garden suitable to the climate of your surrounds.
On a recent trip to Australia, I was pleasantly surprised to see succulents and agave plants flourishing everywhere.
Back in Malaysia, we can and do grow succulents, and there are thriving gardening groups which actively grow, propagate and sell these beauties, sometimes at very steep prices.
But our succulents are not as succulent (pun intended), or as huge as the beauties I saw Down Under.
I gather the climate there is more suitable to succulent and agave plants than over here in hot and rainy Malaysia.
But coming back to point, if you would like a pretty, thriving garden, always start with plants best suited to your climate. With your blooming success, your pocket and pride will not take a direct hit.
My garden has changed bit by bit with our continued additions. Plus, we have also been creating little nooks and corners throughout the home, with the thoughtful placement of selected potted plants to enhance the ambiance of the home.
While the end is not quite in sight, I am not fussed since the changing façade brings joy and cheer to all at home.
