The first response teams are, important, because they're in control, of getting everything working, and this station manager was very experienced, in using empathy, to get the father who'd abducted his own young, to turn the infant over, without any harm coming to both the father and the baby…translated…
The manager of the substation, Wu-Ming Chiao, and Hong-Jen Yang, the two officers of the law, drove out on the patrol cars, making the rounds in Sanming District, station manager, Chiao on the passenger side, twenty-nine years of age, average in height, a righteous face, with the intelligence twinkling in his, eyes. This was three in the afternoon, a dry November day, sun is up high, everything bright. The streets of local Kaohsiung is fluid and smooth. The talkie on the station manager's left side started calling out, the Sanming Substation center reported, "abduction in Alley 461 in Chien-Gong Road, suspect in a vehicle, started running five minutes ago, the car is speeding southbound on Da-Shun Road, Silver Toyota Corolla, license plate 7R3, all patrol officers on deck!"
They were the closest to the location, on Chien-Xing Road, not far from Dashun Road, the officer, Hong-Jen drove to the location quickly, the call center continued, "the suspect abducted his own two-months-old daughter, got into a fight with his wife about money, told he was going to kill himself and their young."
Suddenly, the station manager's thoughts turned: this is NOT an abduction for money; saving the infant is the priority; what's the temperament of the suspect? He'd reported back to the call center, "help me get into contact with the suspect's wife."
Not long afterwards came a woman's worried voice, "sir, help save my child, he said he was going to commit suicide with her!", he'd slowed the paces of his words down, that w3as the psych course back in Police Academy, and what he'd learned in hostage negotiation class, "tell me, why did you two fight?"
She'd become calmer then, "my friend, Ana, lent $400,000N.T. to my husband, and now, she'd needed the cash quickly, told him to pay her back, and he'd told her he didn't have it, that he was cut off, and owed someone else a million dollars N.T. I got furious, because he'd lied to me, told that the money was for the business. And called me for favoring my friend over him, that I was a lesbian! I'd told him I wanted a divorce. He knew how much I loved and cared for my daughter, he took her and ran off………"
The station manager interjected, "was he drunk? How does he treat your daughter ordinarily? Often had conflicts with others?"
"He wasn't drunk. He was okay with my daughter, would hold her every now and then. He got into a lot of small disagreements with his own friends."
He'd immediately reached the conclusions, that the man wasn't coldblooded, nor was he the explosive type, he may be the kind that gets pushed to something bad, easily angered when pushed. Hong-Jen was an excellent driver, cutting in front all the cars before them, at this time, their patrol car got to the intersection of Chien-Xing and Da-Shun Road, waiting for the lights. To tell the truth, the heavens are on their, sides, the patrol officers were sharp, there is the silver Toyota Corolla that sped through Da-Shun Road, Hong-Jen pressed the button, the siren started sounding, the red light on top of the vehicle started, spinning.
Huang was too angry, upset that his wife sided with that woman! That she'd mentioned she wanted a divorce! He'd gone against his own mother's wishes, married her, and she was poor! An INGRATE! He'd known, that the way to hurt her, is by using their daughter. He planned to drive into the Kao-Ping Creek! At this time, he'd heard the sirens, saw the spinning red lights of the police patrol vehicle, two cars behind him, didn't realize, that he was the one they're, chasing. Waited until the patrol cars were by his car, driving alongside him, and the officers used the loud speaker, told him to pull over, that was when he'd realized, that it was, bad. He looked over at his daughter, lying on the passenger side, staring right at, him, thought, that it must be his wife who'd called the police, that he'd, abducted their, daughter.
And so, Huang can only, pull over to the curb. The police patrol vehicle swerved to in front of his car, the call center reported, "the squadron's a minute out, if it's safe, station manager Chiao can go sort through the issues with the suspect."
The station manager got out, kept his eyes on Huang inside the car, with his hands on the steering wheel, the station manager used a normal speed, got to the driver's window, he looked in his thirties, face full of anger, and red too. No weapons in the car. The station manager intentionally slowed down the speed of his words, "I just want to talk to you, do turn off the ignition."
Cheng's hands were shaking now, anger was in his eyes. He didn't turn the ignition off, was ready to drive off at any moment of time, barked out angrily, "I know you've come for me!"
The station manager said, "no, we're not here to arrest you. You only had a fight with your own wife, there's no need for an arrest over that. Look, I'm here, alone." Cheng saw the other patrol officer on the sidewalk, looking this way, the station manager continued, "I'm worried about your daughter, she's not in a car seat!"
That was when Cheng lifted his head to stare the officer straight in his eyes, seeing the genuine concern from his eyes toward his young daughter, he'd felt, a bit, calmer then. The station manager told him, "it's ordinary, fighting with your wife, they often make something out of nothing!"
Cheng nodded, "yeah, something out of, nothing! And always say the wrong things too!"
The manager told him, "my wife used the wrong beliefs when she'd argued with me too, totally without ANY inkling of care of concerns!"
These words got into the man's heart, he'd told the officer, "just like that, and it pisses me off!"
The station manager got close to the window, lowered his voice, "once I got so furious, I'd grabbed a…….and thrown it at her!"
Cheng couldn't hear clearly, leaned his head in toward the windows, "threw what?"
"A box of tissue, you know, I know the laws!"
Cheng let out a sigh, the station manager saw he was relaxed, told him, "your daughter is so well-behaved! Doesn't cry, just like my son. Mine's three months old, how about yours?"
"Two months old", Cheng had, turned the ignition off.
The station manager told him, "it's too inconvenient that you have a baby in your car, you need to change her, feed her, she would cry, how do you drive? It's not good for you that your daughter is in the car with you!"
He became curious, "why is that?"
The station manager now uses the dose on him, "if someone took your child, abducted her, then it's, a criminal offense, obstruction of freedom. And you may get sent to jail, so, your child being in the car with you, it's not, good for, you."
Cheng was stunned, didn't think, that an argument with his own wife could, lead to, this, the station manager saw his expression, continued, "there's a way to resolve this, just give your daughter to me, and you will be, fine."
Cheng look over at his young daughter, she's, fast, asleep, her parents got at one another's, throats, and the cops are involved, and yet, she'd, behaved herself, too, perfectly! The feeling of cherishing came from within, he'd settled down, thought for a while, rolled the window down, and handed his own young daughter to the officers. And, at this time, the officers, Hong-Jen, along with the four members of the SWAT, and all the other patrol officers who'd rushed over all, let out a, sigh of, relief. They're now, hooraying on the inside.
The station manager, Chiao took the baby, carried her like he'd known how all along, told Cheng, "now, can you come with us to the station? You are compliant to our requests, and your daughter, unharmed, you won't be held responsible."
Cheng got out of his car in silence, the station manager handed the baby to a female officer, they got into the ambulance, the station manager started scanning Cheng all over, all the pocket, and there were no sight of anything sharp or dangerous, he'd not cuffed Chng, the two got into the car that was driven by the station manager.
Now, tell me this is not a noteworthy case. I saw this in October, 2023, there was, a ten-second report, don't remember which station I saw it on, the location of where the man was taken in, I'd recalled there were the suspect's face in the car, with the baby lying on the passenger side, with both their faces blacked out, must've been from the bodycam that's right in front of the bulletproof vest that the arresting officers were wearing that's captured the footage. I want to write this short story, for this patrol officer who was, intelligent, agile, and quick to react, in this, dangerous, situation.
So, this is based off of a true story, and this still just showed, how easily the children became scapegoat of their parents' arguments, and in the moment of anger, this man made the wrong decision, but, because of how noncombative the mindset of the station manager was, it all got, resolved, with nobody wounded.
