#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! DC dominates this week's releases like they're trying to make up for lost time but some great choices as Jason Aaron takes Batman Off World and it's round two against Godzilla and Kong. Image going more on the collected editions path with some amazing choices including my favorite Black Science and a great gift idea. Marvel continues with Dark Droids for Star Wars and closer to Earth Carnage is back, and we revisit some older stories. The top five is sponsored by All C's Collectibles who will have discounts store wide for Black Friday. Great chance to get something for the collector in your life; but for now, we've for five stacked high ready to fly:
Void Rivals #6> END OF STORY ARC Premier Zalilak will stop at nothing to prevent Darak and Solila from escaping Zertonia! But what secret awaits at the center of the Sacred Ring? (S) Robert Kirkman (A) Matheus Lopes, Lorenzo De Felici
Smurfs Take> The surprise hit of the season comes to what I have no doubt will be a barn burning conclusion. As I've said before, even without the Transformer connection this story has been some of Kirkman's best writing in a long while. I literally have no idea what to expect and while I hope it's not the same trick twice to close out this arc, I'm more than eager to get my hands on this.
Incredible Hulk #6> ATTACK OF THE ZOMBIE GHOST RIDER! Charlie reminds Bruce that he's more than a man on the run - he's an Avenger, a hero. And heroes help people. When their travels lead them to a Texas town under attack by dreaded monstrosities known as war devils, it's time for the Hulk to step in… …but he rouses an undead Spirit of Vengeance from his eternal slumber, summoning a 100-year-old Ghost Rider to ride down the Hulk! (S) Phillip Kennedy Johnson (A) Nic Klein
Smurfs Take> Such a great hit! A perfect fit for the Hulk and great story involving some surprise characters. I was sold at Man-Thing to be honest, but it's only gotten better with each issue and love the direction the title has taken, so many Peter David feels on this.
Catwoman #59> The Catwoman we know has vanished. Selina Kyle is gone. She's no longer Gotham's fugitive–she's its ghost. After the events of The Gotham War, Selina leaves the city a forever-changed woman with a plan: nine deadly missions, each one set aside for their certain lethality–only possible for a cat with nine lives. (S) Tini Howard (A) Stefano Raffaele
Smurfs Take> Geee she faked her death. No surprise and fine with it, really. The idea of pulling Catwoman out of Gotham and let her go solo for now is a spectacular idea. I enjoyed her more independent stories back in the day and it seems DC has made her more of an accessory to Batman than anything thing; about time they break away from that.
Superman Batman Worlds Finest #21> Superman and Batman, having followed Boy Thunder to Kingdom Come, find themselves and that world on a path to an apocalyptic future. Can the World's Finest team prevent the transformation of Boy Thunder into the villainous Magog, or is his fate sealed? (S) Mark Waid (A) Dan Mora
Smurfs Take> Not what I expected in the first part of the story but still a good read and something fun. How often do we get to see Superman and Batman wondering around in street clothes trying to keep a low profile? It really set the stage of what's to come and how we get to Kingdom Come as the two explore Earth 22.
The Holy Roller #1> SERIES PREMIEREEveryone was sitting around wondering when comedy legend ANDY SAMBERG (SNL, Palm Springs) would join super-star writer RICK REMENDER (DEADLY CLASS, LOW) and Fall Out Boy's multi-talented JOE TROHMAN to write a comic about a vigilante hero who smashes people's faces with a bowling ball—and everyone's dreams have come true! With art by the fan-favorite ROLAND BOSCHI (THE SCUMBAG, Wolverine)! To care for his ailing father, pro bowler Levi Coen is forced to quit his dream job and return to his hometown, which he soon discovers has been overrun by Neo-Nazis! With only his bowling ball collection to defend himself, Levi becomes THE HOLY ROLLER, a trick bowling ball-wielding Jewish superhero battling to liberate his home and bowl a perfect game against crime!Kingpin meets Inglourious Basterds meets Batman (that old chestnut) with equal parts action and humor in this special introductory issue with 42 full pages of story! Two issues for the price of one! Three writers for the price of one! Same great low price! (S) Joe Trohman, Andy Samberg, Rick Remender (A) Roland Boschi
Smurfs Take> Well this just looks too funny to pass up! Really no expectations for this other than to be totally entertained and see if Andy Samberg is any good at writing comics. Granted he's got Remender backing him up so how dangerous of a choice could it be.
Black Science 10th Anniversary Deluxe HC Vol. 1> FIRST PRINTING LIMITED TO 6000 COPIES Grant McKay, former member of the Anarchistic Order of Scientists, has finally done the impossible: he has deciphered Black Science and punched through the barriers of reality. But what lies beyond the veil is not epiphany, but chaos. The only question is how far are they willing to go, and how much can they endure, to get home again? Celebrating 10 years of the critically acclaimed sci-fi series by powerhouse creative duo RICK REMENDER and MATTEO SCALERA, this anniversary edition is crammed with sketches, concept art, and other rare goodies in a glorious oversized 8" x 12" hardcover, and features an all-new cover by MATTEO SCALERA! Smurfs Take> Such a spectacular series! Glad that the entire run has been released today but you have to start somewhere. This had so many fun elements to it, going full science fiction with some brave choices and consequences.
