Last night, I went to bed with the song "If Tomorrow Never Comes" rolling around inside my head. The song surfaced in my head out of no where earlier in the day when I arrived at church.
Perhaps you remember some of the lyrics: "If tomorrow never comes Will she know how much I loved her Did I try in every way to show her every day That she's my only one And if my time on earth were through And she must face this world without me Is the love I gave her in the past Gonna be enough to last If tomorrow never comes"
Most people are still asleep, but I awakened before 5:00 this morning, and the sound track was still playing inside my head. I'd say it is a good song. The song is a love song, but I'm fairly certain that it has never been sung inside our church.
When it comes to memory, I don't alway get it right. I do remember Randy Travis' song, "Pray for the Fish" being sung at church. On the other hand, I could be confusing that with "They Baptized Jesse Taylor." Both songs indirectly make reference to faith and hope.
"They baptized Jesse Taylor in Cedar Creek last Sunday Jesus gained a soul and Satan lost a good right arm They all cried Hallelujah as Jesse's head went under Cause this time he went under for the Lord"
I can almost imagine that some of you are scratching your head and wondering where I'm going with this? Perhaps I'm grasping at straws, but I'm trying to wrap my head around a good explanation of why our church is already decorated for Christmas. The picture of the church accompanying my blog was taken yesterday.
I've walked in Home Depot before the end of October and done an about face when I saw a selection of Christmas trees. It is like getting the cart-before-the-horse, so to speak. Maybe I'm overly simplistic, but why don't we celebrate Thanksgiving Day before we roll out the red carpet and sing Christmas Carols?
Okay, so I'm not a spring chicken, and some might say that: "I'm old and set in my ways." I'm more of a one thing at a time kind of guy. That being said, having the church decorated for Christmas long before Thanksgiving is not the end of the world. In terms of things that really matter, it doesn't count.
In fact, I think you could say "If tomorrow never comes", at least we focused on the good news of the birth of Jesus as we walked into church yesterday.
