Director Edgar Wright said James Bond films are an exception to movie franchises that crank out installments.
"I think they're pretty smart actually," Wright said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. "They're willing to kind of put a pause on things to build anticipation...They're smart enough to kind of put the brakes on and build anticipation so you'll be excited about the next one."
Some franchises, he said while not naming specifics, announce "massive slates" of projects, and "there's a danger of killing the golden goose."
While Wright didn't name names, there is one obvious candidate.
The Marvel Studios unit of Walt Disney Co. has made 33 movies since 2008. In recent years it added TV shows for the Disney + streaming channel. Its most recent effort, The Marvels, isn't doing well at the box office. That movie, released Nov. 10, has generated less than $80 million in the U.S. and less than $190 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
Also in the interview, Wright was about about statements he made it may be time for a lighter take on Bond. "I pitched this idea to Barbara herself, Barbara Broccoli herself. I'm not sure she completely went with it."
Broccoli is the boss of Eon Productions, which produces the 007 films. She has said repeatedly that little to no work has taken place on Bond 26. The Eon chief says the company is pondering what to do with Bond after actor Daniel Craig completed five Bond movies from 2006 to 2021.
Here is the YouTube version of the podcast. The Bond talk starts at the 46:59 mark.
