Merry (early) Christmas! This December, I'm practicing a frugal concept of using what I have on hand! Let's dive into what that has meant for my household this week!
Christmas decorations are so fun! It's so easy to buy new ones when they come out in the store! But the more frugal course of action is to get out what we already have. Many of us have a small box of ornaments, some faux greenery, ribbons or lace, or a tree skirt. Use an old blanket for a tree skirt, some simple baubles or pictures for ornaments, or a bit of yard trimmings for greenery. If you truly have no decorations, the thrift shop is a great place for a faux tree or ornaments. It takes very little to make merry, so kick up your heels and make the best of what you have!
This year we have two faux trees, one upstairs and one in the living room. We've had these trees for several years, which equates to no spending on Christmas trees. The upstairs tree has quilted ornaments and a quilted tree skirt. My decorations fit in a single tote, which I like. The ornaments are flat, so they fit easily in a zip top bag. I love how I can easily make merry upstairs with one Christmas tree box and one tote!
When Doc and I were first married, I was delighted to find an older faux tree for 5 dollars at a yard sale. I knew, even in the scorching heat of summer, that Christmas was coming. Those same sorts of deals are available at yard sales and thrift stores. I've even seen pretty nativities at the thrift shops. Sometimes the plastic ones just need a coat of white paint to make them shine!
I hope this has been an encouragement to you to use what you already have for Christmas. Christmas really isn't about decorations anyway. I pray that each of you finds the true meaning of Christmas this season, Jesus. He's the reason we celebrate!
