Hello friends, wow it has been a long time since I chatted with you. In October we went to the church we have been visiting, and I promptly got very sick. For most of October and November I stayed sick, and just couldn't shake it. November was also a bad migraine month for me (I recorded 12 migraines but I think I had more). All my energy was spent getting well; I wanted to blog but didn't have the mental energy.
I did manage to sew and knit a few items to add to my autumn and winter wardrobe. Also, in November I got my hair cut a few inches shorter. Last April I asked my husband to cut my waist length hair to my shoulders. It's been growing since April, and was a little below my shoulders, but I wanted it a bit shorter. My hair is so staticky in winter so I thought this would help.
Anyways, let's get onto the outfits! First up is my very first knit sweater! It's made from 2 types of orange wool and it's so cozy. I love this colour and it coordinates with so many of my other items of clothing.
Next up is a plaid flannel skirt. The fabric was given to me but it sat unused for many months because I didn't know what to do with it. I decided I needed some nice clothes for church this winter, so I made a maxi skirt. I didn't use a pattern; the skirt is rectangles and the waistband is a long rectangle. It has a zipper in the back. I gathered the skirt panels to fit my waist, making smaller pleats on the front of the skirt and fewer large pleats on the back. I didn't want any extra fullness on the back or near the sides because they make me look wider. Full disclosure: my size changes a lot. Sometimes I'm a little bigger and sometimes smaller. For that reason I tend to avoid skirts with a fitted waist. But I really wanted this skirt to have one, so I made sure to add some hidden pleats near the zipper and left extra fabric on the waistband. This means I can let out the waist if needed. I'm wearing the skirt with a brown sweater that belonged to David's grandma. It had a turtleneck but I cut it to be a crew neck. You can do this with knits, just be sure to cut it higher than you want so it can be folded down and sewn in place.
Next up is a dress made from a thrifted curtain. I really wish I bought more of the curtains (there were several!!) but they were pretty pricey. I used almost all the fabric to make this dress. It's a simple dress, just 2 pieces. It is quite shapeless, but I added some discreet darts on the front and back. The dress was too short for my preference, but since I didn't have any more fabric, I added lace. Overall, I'm pleased with how it turned out.
Next is a knit open vest. I used to have some sleeveless vests (cardigans?) but I didn't wear them often enough so I donated them. This was several years ago, and I wished I had them now! But they weren't ideal for me so I decided to knit one instead of looking in thrift stores. This was so easy to knit! I probably should have used a thicker yarn but this is what I had on hand. It's a cream yarn with flecks of brown and black. It feels like wearing a blanket. There are no buttons but sometimes I use a brooch to keep it closed right at the top.
Ok, last one! I sewed a dress from a drop cloth. I also dyed it brown, since I wasn't crazy about the original colour. The dress is a gathered skirt, and a bodice that is a bit wider than me. I added some hidden pleats in the bodice so I can let them out when I go up a size. The faux button placket (still needs buttons) hides these pleats.
In addition to these items, I've also knit a pair of socks. I wanted to sew some more church clothes but I didn't have the time or energy. Probably in the new year!
