I credit my mother with my knowing the phrase: "A stitch in time saves nine." Her innate wisdom seemed to flow out of things she learned along life's way. Maybe it's a play on words, but I'm choosing to identify our Christmas decoration theme this year as cross stitch.
It seems to fit with the reason for the season. Perhaps the most often quoted Scripture is found in John 3:16: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." The Savior was crucified on a cross and rose again on the third day.
This is the first Christmas in three that we have chosen to decorate for Christmas. We were in temporary housing the previous two Christmases and our decorations, nativity scenes, and Christmas keepsakes were in storage. That's not to say the General hasn't been busy anticipating the day that a Christmas tree would once again adorn our home.
The primary ornaments found on this year's tree are the work of the General's hands. They are cross stitched ornaments. I've included pictures to give you some idea of what I'm talking about.
In addition, she's done several cross-stitch pictures with a Christmas theme. This year, for the first time ever, she's displayed two different sets of dishes that also carry a Christmas theme. In past years, we've alternated between the two sets. This year, there is room to display both.
Historically, we've used the mantel to display the hand carved nativity set gifted us by the General's sister and brother-in-law, when they were living in Africa. It is so unique that it continues to be a treasured gift that we value highly.
This year, I chose to display that set on top of the hutch in our dinning area. Had I mentioned my intent to do that to the General, she probably would have suggested we stick with tradition. The truth of the matter is that we had nowhere else to display the Willow Tree nativity set we previously displayed on a tabletop. That tabletop is now a workstation for my computer.
I didn't get a vote in the matter, but the General chose to display her collection of International Santa's in the room upstairs. Actually, the discovery put a smile on my face. They look great.
I could go on and on, but let me simply say that we had a really enjoyable day decorating our home for Christmas. It filled us with reminders regarding the reason for the season.
