| T Coe Dec 18 | Watch - Stories We Tell. Dir. Sarah Polley. I was awestruck by this documentary. The capsule summary of the film might make it sound like a depressing watch, but it's anything but. And, in fact, it's about far more than the mystery of Polley's own parentage—it's about how people construct the stories of their lives.
- "AI can do your homework. Now what?" Vox. YouTube. Loved this take on the challenges of AI in the classroom because it connected with the real value of learning, as opposed to just "writing essays."
- "Your supplements are a lie." Johnny Harris. YouTube. It's scary how little control the government has over this billions-dollar industry.
- "'Fairytale of New York' played at Shane MacGowan's funeral." YouTube. Loved this tribute to The Pogues frontman.
Read - Popular: The Power of Likability in a Status-Obsessed World. Mitch Prinstein. Despite being a breezily-written pop psychology book, this was no easy read. While I wasn't a "Neglected" (in the parlance of the book) in high school, I was certainly not popular—and it's troubling to learn how big an impact popularity in youth can have on your life.
- The Lola Quartet. Emily St. John Mandel. Not my favorite of her novels, but a gripping read nevertheless. Mandel does a wonderful job cutting in and out of multiple character perspectives and jumping back and forth across a 10-year period.
Listen - Dry. PJ Harvey. A bracing and surprisingly bluesy album from an artist I'm just getting to know.
- Rid of Me. PJ Harvey. A powerful listen—the stark Steve Albini production really does a number on you.
