Google doesn't know the best commute.
It shocked me when I realized this. I don't know how Google Maps comes by its route recommendations—but the app almost always tells me to take the same route to work every day.
To be fair, there was another route that Google suggested. It was a matter of traffic, I figured. When I-25 was jammed, Google Maps would send me coasting down Federal to Speer.
But then—after years of having seen only these two routes—a surprise. Google added a variation to the mix.
The variation included a quarter mile stretch where hundreds of cars would be jockeying to get into the rightmost lane. On Google Maps, this section invariably appeared as a dark red line, and the app assumed it would take some time to get through this traffic. But Google Maps didn't seem to know about the other three lanes in the road.
It became clear to me that this was the best commute, but Google Maps would apparently decline to recommend it to me. I save at least 10 minutes a day on this alternative route.
