| T Coe Dec 15 | Every office I've ever worked in has a distinct vibe. It's some combination of the physical office itself, the work being done there, the people, and—of course—the amorphous blob of a concept that is "office culture." I'm vague on definition here because I've never encountered a satisfactory one. Definitions can have the curious side effect of convincing us we have control over something. But language doesn't give us power in that way, though it can In my 10 years of office life, attempts at influencing culture have mostly fallen flat. You can't really regulate a vibe—and if you try too hard, you will create a vibe…but it will be weird. The best office vibes are unsanctioned—the oddball notes or posts, the odd overheard moments.
