#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! A little lighter this week as we close in on the end of 2023 but still lots of choices to be made. The death of Beast Boy last week was just heart breaking! We'll see if DC has more up its sleeve as Beast World continues and Constantine visits Superman. Image continuing with Haunted Girl and an interesting twist to Radiant Black. Marvel with a few dark choices this week from Star Wars and more Gang War confusion. Sponsored by All C's Collectibles who's running different sales till the end of the season, stop by for your deal today; but for now, we've got five stacked high ready to fly:
Batman #428 Robin Lives> What if one of the darkest hours in Batman's crime-fighting career never happened? Thirty-five years ago, fans voted on Jason Todd's fate after his brutal encounter with The Joker, which set Jason on the path to becoming the gun-toting vigilante Red Hood. But suppose fans had voted differently…DC Comics transports you back in time with this special faux-simile edition of Batman #428 in which Robin lives! Featuring pages reconstructed from artist Jim Aparo's alternate art boards–which have been plucked from the DC vault and fully restored and remastered–this reedited version of A Death in the Family, Book Three turns the Dark Knight's greatest tragedy into a moment of triumph. Adding to the immersive authenticity of this alternate-history comic book, this version includes all the ads from the original 1988 edition plus a rewritten letter's column. (S) Jim Starlin (A) Jim Aparo, Mike Decarlo
Smurfs Take> An interesting take on an Elseworld idea. I normally don't go in for the reissue or reprints of older issues, would rather just go and find it, but this…now this has my attention. Like the millions out there I voted for the end of Jason Todd and it was hard not to. I honestly think they wrote the character the way they did to insure his fate. But to get the actual pages pulled together and restored makes for an interesting read and to be honest I can't imagine the story going in any other direction than what it did. Something old with something new; heads up on the different covers on this one I have a feeling they are going to go quickly.
Guardians of the Galaxy #9> MANTIS' MISSION? EARTH! The Guardians of the Galaxy have all had to change and adapt since the Grootfall began but none more than Mantis. What fractured Mantis, and what secrets has she been keeping from the team? It's time to put the past to bed, and there's only one thing that can help the Guardians do it: an INFINITY STONE! (S) Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing (A) Kev Walker
Smurfs Take> The return of the Guardians has been fantastic. Something fun and unexpected as each character got a new little twist and the biggest twist still mostly a mystery with Mantis. I've enjoyed how they've done her character for this story, and I know we've seen this before but not to this level and done so well. The plan for Grootfall still a mystery but this title continues to make steps forward into the unknow and it keeps getting better.
Immortal Thor #5> THE ALL-NEW THOR CORPS! Toranos has returned - and to face him, the King of Asgard has gathered his army. But if even an army of storm gods could not stop the Elder God of Thunder...what then? This is the story of THE IMMORTAL THOR...and the battle that will define him. (S) Al Ewing (A) Martin Coccolo
Smurfs Take> Wasn't sure what to expect on this title so I put it off till we got a few issues in, and now it's safe to say I've latched on hard. It's been very clever and now we are getting a few more Thor's to pull us deeper into the story…terrific. More Thor and less Marvel U is perfect!
The Bloody Dozen: A Tale of Shrouded College #1> MINISERIES PREMIERE
SPACE VAMPIRES! In this new installment of THE SHROUDED COLLEGE, CHARLES SOULE & WILL SLINEY's supernatural horror-adventure saga, three down-and-out astronauts are tasked with the ultimate heist—breaking a group of deadly vampires out of a space prison orbiting the Sun. Apollo 13 meets Blade in this killer thriller! (S) Charler Soule (A) Alberto Jimenez Alburquerque
Smurfs Take> This looks great and for some reason screams an episode of Buck Rodgers to me. I can't wait to read this! I know Image likes to come up with some ideas that are really out there but this one….is really something different. Sci-Fi and horror all in one happy package!
Marvel Zombies: Black, White, & Blood #3> THE MARVEL ZOMBIES ARE BACK…AND THEY'RE HUNGRY! Take another bite of horror with three more tales from the Marvel Universe - but not a Marvel Universe like the one we know! From New York City to a mysterious small town to a mystical forest full of gods and monsters, the zombie plague has clawed its way everywhere…so what chance do the heroes stand to save the day? Read and find out, True Believers… (S) Cheryl Eaton, Matthew Groom, Peach Momoko (A) Alessandro Vitti, Peach Momoko
Smurfs Take> I'm not over the Marvel Zombie thing but coming close to my fill of it. Problem is there's only so many ways the stories can go and trying not to burn out. Then I saw that Peach was part of this issue and I couldn't say no. Without a doubt one of the biggest rising stars of the past few years and I really enjoy her work. Excited to see her take on the story and where she takes us.
