The right to speak, though entrenched in every constitution is always challenged by societal norms, cultures, and expectations. In Nigeria, we often say 'you have freedom of speech, but freedom after speech is not guaranteed'.
When you grow up hearing such rhetoric like a subtle threat every time something happens, it is understandable to question your right to speak . However in recent times, the rotten effect of the silent culture is becoming visible and we don't like it either.
It is becoming essential to clarify how quiet you should be and keeping quiet in the face of harm or impending danger is becoming unacceptable. Hence a new generation of speakers are emerging, taking on the battle of speaking on behalf of those who fear for their freedom after speaking. The knowledge of this is helping more people speak up, bringing burning issues to the front burner in the face of stiff cultural opposition.
Digital tools and anonymous reporting is helping more communities move from stagnancy to progression as non patriarchal issues are raised and addressed.
A single story has been known to change narratives and cause change, a single rape story, a single story of abuse, a single of grass to grace, a single story of DIY or Recycling has been proven to catalyze whole communities.
My story or yours could be the next thing needed to save the next generation so let us speak up and be the change.
