A couple of days ago, a 7:00 p.m. Facebook posting by Mayor Stephanie Fisher of Johnson City was alarming in nature. Reportedly, on the evening of January 17th, the City of Blanco, Texas declared Stage 6 Water Restrictions. The City of Johnson City is currently making the needed water available to the residents of Blanco via Blanco County Emergency Management. Fisher reports that she reached out to Mayor Arnold to let him know that Johnson City will help our neighbors to the south in any way we can.
It was strictly coincidental that we stopped by H.E.B. in Dripping Springs yesterday afternoon. Guess what was on the grocery list? We needed to replenish our supply of 1-gallon jugs of water. I needed the water to make coffee.
Yesterday's sunshine and warmth was a nice contrast to the freezing cold weather that potentially left water pipes frozen earlier in the week. It just takes one cold spell for gallon jugs of water to disappear off the shelves at the grocery store. We certainly found that to be true yesterday.
Of course, there is a country song for just about anything. The sound of Marty Robbin's filled my head, though he is not the recording star that made "Cool Water" popular. "Cool Water" was written by Bob Nolan in 1936. The song tells the story of a parched man and his mule traveling a wasteland tormented by mirages. The best selling recorded version of the the song was sung by Vaugh Monroe and the Sons of the Pioneers in 1948.
The lyrics may be familiar to you. Perhaps it could become the theme song for Blanco County?
All day I've faced a barren waste
Without the taste of water
Cool water
Old Dan and I with throats burned dry
And souls that cry for water
Cool, clear water
[Verse 2]
The nights are cool and I'm a fool
Each star's a pool of water
Cool water
And with the dawn I'll wake and yawn
And carry on to water
Cool, clear water
[Chorus]
Keep a-movin, Dan, dontcha listen to him, Dan
He's a devil, not a man
And he spreads the burning sand with water
Dan, can ya see that big, green tree?
Where the water's runnin' free
And it's waiting there for you and me?
Water
Cool, clear water"
Did I mention that the landscape person we selected for our home has gotten started? We are not including a sprinkler system. The past two years have been the driest two years on record. Our flower beds will be filled with rock. The same is true for our lawn. Xeriscape is the name of the game and it will not include a blade of grass.
All My Best!
Don
