Bloganuary writing prompt
If you could un-invent something, what would it be?
Texting. I absolutely hate texting. I do not see the cuteness of using an emjoi or cutey acronyms. Texting has eliminated interpersonal communication for many people. There is the potential for a lot of missed communication that we see from body language, micro expressions, and tone of voice. If someone wants to have a conversation with me and they live far away, we are doing that in a Zoom meetting or on Facetime.
Texting can be very lazy communication. It has become almost a way to deal with people because you have to. One of my friends is a long chat on the phone. My husband has often remarked why not just text her. Well, she would text for hours. I set the limit for her to call when I can give her my full attention. We have a 2 hour time difference. 5 am me is not my best self, call me at 7 a.m and I am ready.
Texting has a few uses. Reminders for appointments, grocery lists to your spouse, directions, and little greetings.
Bigger conversations should be handled with handwritten letters, emails, and face to face conversations.
