Dear Snarky,
One of my best friends has asked me to be the maid of honor in her wedding. I was thrilled until she told me that being her maid of honor meant that I would have some "extra expenses." One of those expenses being paying for her airfare and her mom's plus covering the cost of a suite at a hotel for her 3-day Bachelorette party in Miami
I was speechless when she told me that and I'm sure I looked like a deer in the headlights. By the time I walked to my car I was furious. That's a huge ask of someone and will cost thousands of dollars.
As I drove home, I called another bridesmaid to vent and found out that the bride had already asked two other girls to the be the maid of honor and they said no thanks when she told them about the "extra expense." So now I'm extra pissed that I was the 3rd choice and that my best friend is auctioning off who gets to be the maid of honor.
I'm of course going to turn down being maid of honor but now I'm thinking of bowing out of being in the wedding at all. Another bridesmaid, one who has already turned down being the maid of honor, told me that that would be taking it too far.
What do you think?
Signed, Still a Deer in the Headlights
Dear Speechless,
Run like the wind from this wedding. Run like you're being chased by the hounds of hell. The whole bestowing the maid of honor distinction to the sucker who will pay the most is despicable and believe me when I tell you you've only seen the tip of the iceberg. It's going to be a master class of greedy, self-entitled behavior with a side of crazy bitch.
If you're worried, and honestly I don't know why, of losing this woman as a friend if you bow out of the wedding, trust me by the time this shrew walks down the aisle there won't be a shred of friendship left. So you're losing nothing by taking a hard pass.
What you are saving by saying "no thanks" is your dignity, mental health and your bank account. So give this bridezilla a polite "sorry but upon further consideration I just don't think I have the bandwidth to be a bridesmaid but thanks for thinking of me" and be done with what I know will be an epic cluster.

Now here's something that's epic but in a good way - my books! 📚From Empty a "laugh till you cry" menopausal revenge adventure perfect for any women in your life who buys wrinkle cream in bulk to the Snarky four pack - Back to School, Trouble in Texas, Four Seasons of Snarky and Killer Dance Mom.
Back to School is a hysterical read for any mom currently marinating in elementary school parent drama. Trouble in Texas is a tall tale of what happens when a mother just can't stop meddling and enlists her 40 something daughter in her schemes. And Four Seasons of Snarky is the ideal book to give to someone who needs a primer on suburban revenge plots. (The book is a series of short stories so it's awesome for the person who doesn't have a lot of time to read.) Killer Dance Mom is the first Snarky mystery and involves all the crazy of being a dance mom especially when a judge gets murdered.
