As I faced the day on Sunday morning, many things came to my mind. I obviously slept later than I planned, but it felt good to be in our own bed. For the previous three weeks, we had mostly been on dog duty, and staying at our daughter's home. We had a four-day break at Christmas, but we weren't home then either. As I peered out the windows, the sound of Cat Stevens singing Morning Has Broken rolled around inside my head.
I was coming out of a week-long antihistamine fog, and it felt good to think of myself as having all my oars in the water. That's not to say that I think of myself as being the sharpest Crayola in the box, but being headache free is a good start on the day, and it felt good to be home.
I had an appointment with an orthopedic doctor yesterday and have confidence in his skillset. He is the surgeon that performed the double hip replacement on Andera several years ago. He is top shelf in her books. I found him thorough in his examination and equally impressive.
As a first order of business following his examination, he ordered an elevated insert for my orthopedic boot. He wanted it placed inside the boot before I left his office. He explained that the elevated insert would minimize the stretch on the Achilles tendon. Without that relief, the tendon isn't going to heal properly and regain strength.
What he didn't explain is the challenge that presents in walking. I'm guesstimating that the back of the insert is approximately 4 inches high. It makes me question why women would ever choose to wear high heels.
As I tiptoed on one foot to the elevator, the assistant suggested it might be beneficial to use a walking cane. That might prevent me from falling on my face. I was initially a little concerned that the sole of the walking boot is thicker than my shoes. That was no challenge compared to walking with one foot in a high heel.
I have an MRI scheduled for later today. It might be more accurate to say much later today. My appointment is for 10:00 p.m. tonight in Southwest Austin. Keeping that appointment is going to stretch more than my Achilles tendon. It will be way past my bedtime when I get home.
All My Best!
Don
