#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! Welcome to the new year! Excited to see what's instore for us in 2024 as we slowly get back to the grind. What new stories await, characters to discover, and milestones to celebrate. Bit of a light week across the shelf except with Marvel, which is good if you're a X-Men or Spidey fan. While DC is taking a more conservative approach this week but Batman and Robin along with Action look promising. Image finishes a few stories and not to overlook the Sacrificers which has been an interesting read. Smurfs high five is sponsored by All C's Collectibles who is offering cash for your unwanted collectible items. Stop by one of the two locations near you, but for now we've got five stacked high ready to fly:
Transformers #4> "DANIEL WARREN JOHNSON is full of surprises." —ComicsOnline When the Decepticons attack the Autobots at their weakest moment, an unlikely new hero joins the battle! With human and Transformer robots' lives at stake, can Optimus Prime unlock the true power behind the Matrix of Leadership to save them both? (S) Daniel Warren Johnson (A) Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer
Smurfs Take> Yeah, that's right, top of the stack! This has been spectacular! Absolutely flawless with so many surprises, right down to the final page (especially with last month issue). I know it's only going to get more impressive since we've barely have gotten out of the opening sequence really. Transformers fan or not you will love this book!
Ultimate Spider-Man #1> THE NEW ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN FOR A NEW ULTIMATE UNIVERSE! Visionary writer Jonathan Hickman (HOUSE OF X/POWERS OF X) and acclaimed artist Marco Checchetto (DAREDEVIL) bring you a bold new take on Spider-Man, with this, the debut title of the new line of Ultimate Comics! After the events of ULTIMATE INVASION, the world needs a hero…who will rise up to take on that responsibility? Prepare to be entangled in a web of mystery and excitement as the all-new ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN comic redefines the wall-crawler for the 21st Century! (S) Jonathan Hickman (A) Marco Checchetto
Smurfs Take> I talked about this on the podcast a few months ago and since then have only grown more excited about revisiting the Ultimate Spidey world. I think the take is on point for an updated Peter and the fam and something we have seen explored in previous runs. Along with all of that, my love for Hickman might also be driving the interest since I would hope he's been given a green light to explore and develop characters as he sees fit. I loved the original run and have big expectations for this title, no doubt about it.
The Mandalorian Season 2 #8> THE RESCUE! The MANDALORIAN and his allies attempt a daring rescue. MOFF GIDEON unleashes the DARK TROOPERS while the fate of GROGU hangs in the balance! Guest-starring an UNEXPECTED JEDI! (S) Rodney Barnes (A) Steven Cummings
Smurfs Take> I got chills at the end of this episode! At no time did it ever cross my mind he was going to get off the elevator and send shockwaves through the nerdverse.
Green Lantern #7> After his explosive confrontation with Sinestro, Green Lantern is confronted by the United Planets Lanterns for illegally operating within the quarantine zone, and the mystery of what took place on Korugar is finally revealed! (S) Jeremy Adams, Peter J. Tomasi (A) Dale Eaglesham, David Lafuente
Smurfs Take> I didn't think I was going to like the grounded idea as much as I have. There's been enough mystery and new ideas to keep the story going without falling into the same old traps of the past. And now we get a few long overdue answers, and I can't wait.
Wolverine #41> SABRETOOTH WAR BEGINS HERE! THE MOST VIOLENT WOLVERINE STORY EVER TOLD! Get ready for the showdown to end all showdowns – WOLVERINE VS. SABRETOOTH! It's been years since these heavy hitters have crossed paths in the Marvel Universe, but as Krakoa falls, so rises SABRETOOTH – and he's out for revenge! They threw VICTOR CREED in the PIT, but he's free and, wielding an army of Sabretooths, will prove once and for all why he is LOGAN's ultimate nemesis. Co-written by literary powerhouses Benjamin Percy (WOLVERINE, GHOST RIDER) and Victor LaValle (The Changeling, SABRETOOTH) and drawn by artistic dynamos Cory Smith (CONAN, GHOST RIDER) and Geoff Shaw (WEAPONS OF VENGEANCE, WOLVERINE: PATCH), don't miss the inaugural issue in this multi-shipping saga leading up to the landmark issue #50! (S) Benjamin Percy, Victor Lavalle (A) Cory Smith, Geoffrey Shaw
Smurfs Take> I've not been big into this title, and to be honest really any of the X-Books. I've stayed current just because of the inner fan but not really enjoying most of the direction or all of the different titles. This however has caught my eye and something I'm surprised took this long to get back to. The clash between the two of these characters is epic and I for one am ready to see a hashing out decades in the making. About time!
