January has been all 31 days long. Maybe ten of those days were actually our usual kind of winter with cold and snow. Otherwise, we mostly had grey days and were too warm in temperatures. It messes with our sense of time and seasons.
But today the sun came out and those glass sun catchers hung in the south windows for if ever it would, are firing and glittering beautifully at last.
I promised myself early in the day that if the sun came out, I would get myself out there and take a walk. A two mile, brisk walking that would get my heart, lungs, and brain a workout. I kept that promise.
Other miracles on my list today are having a friend stop in for coffee, a good book to pick up and read by the half hour on the living room table, and the Daughters of Promise magazine with that great article Again is a Doorway. Exactly what I needed in regards to keeping http://stonehousescribblings.com going. After almost fifteen years I get to feeling like it is maybe over, somehow. At any rate, I have to wonder if it's still doing what I intended or dreamed of when I started.
Admittedly, it's changed some over the years. While others blew by making money and getting fans and followers, I'm still putzing along with my homey pictures and scribbling about life in the northwoods.
In my own defense, it's also still providing a place for me to play with words and organize ideas. It's a place to spout when I need to with basic appropriate filters. I care how I say my thoughts and I want to be understood while being kind about it. Self discipline, because I care what you think.
Bring in February. As we puzzle our way through repeated spring breakups because our oceans are warming I'm thinking we better be thankful. We haven't used much firewood. There's no ice hanging from the eaves. And there haven't been snow plowing chores. What a break! I miss real winter, though, don't you?
