The Beekeeper - Budget of $40 million - 1 hour and 45 minutes
Eloise lives a quiet life in the middle of nowhere, but she has a tenant, Adam Clay, who lives in her garage. He keeps bees and jars their honey. Adam walks to Eloise's house to give her a jar and believes something is wrong. The smoke alarm blares and Eloise's car is in the driveway. He finds Eloise with a photo album in her lap and a bullet wound in her chest. Before he can check, someone tells him to put his hands in the air and kneel. The person is Eloise's daughter, FBI Agent Verona. He expresses his sympathies as Verona sees Eloise dead in the chair. Officers arrive on the scene and declare it a suicide. Verona tells the officers to question Adam.
Officers let Adam go because he didn't have gunshot residue on his hands, and Eloise's prints were the only ones on the gun. Verona apologies. She discovered her mother's laptop, and it revealed why Eloise ended her life. Eloise fell for a fake virus scam, and the thieves emptied her bank accounts, including the charity Eloise managed. The crooks took over $2 million from her accounts. Adam rages because officers overlook scams against older people. From experience, Verona knows it will take time to find the scammers and tells Adam to let her take care of it.
Adam goes to his beehive boxes and pulls out a phone. The receiver thought Adam had retired. He confirms that he isn't working because this is personal. He gives the information and gets the scammers' location. They run their operation from a call center called UDG. Adam grabs two gas cans and drives to the location. Adam warns everyone to leave because he plans to burn the building down. The manager, Garnett, tries to reason with Adam, but Adam keeps his promise.
Garnett calls his boss, Derek, to update him. Derek tells Garnett to find Adam and kill him. Garnett and his goons search through their most recent scores and track down Eloise's home. They see Adam on the property and destroy his boxes. However, Adam kills everyone except Garnett. He cuts off Garnett's fingers and kidnaps him.
Verona works with her partner, Matt, and looks into Adam but finds nothing. He is a ghost. They assume Adam has a military background. They get a call about a fire at UDG and run to question the employees. During Verona's on-site interrogations, they get the alert that Eloise's home is on fire with dead bodies inside. Verona and Matt deduce that Adam is behind the fires and the killings.
Meanwhile, Derek asks Wallace for help. Wallace is the former head of the CIA and knows how to clean up issues. Wallace took the job at the request of Derek's mother, Jessica. He makes a few calls and discovers Adam is extremely dangerous because he was once a part of an elite group of operatives known as the beekeepers. If the law can't help, people come to him. Eloise genuinely cared about people. Adam will repay her kindness and avenge her death by following the money and killing anyone responsible. The world is Adam's hive. It's his job to protect the hive by any means necessary.
As Eloise falls for the scam, your heart breaks. She wants to do the right thing and loses it all. However, Verona and Adam won't take it lying down. While Verona fights within the law, Adam knows the law isn't good enough. For him, due process isn't justice. They are racing against the clock to find the top of the chain. Adam doesn't want to hurt Verona, but she wants to stop him from killing others. And both cared for Eloise. They are two sides of the same coin. This movie expresses this sentiment but doesn't drone on about it. They express their feelings in five minutes and pull out the guns. This action-packed film has quick one-liners and a high body count. And the person at the top will surprise you. If you like action and hate scammers, see this film.
