While going through keepsakes yesterday, I saw a bunch of my old report cards. There were way more As than I recall having.
It's the stray Ds in math that stick in my brain. But honestly, I was a pretty good student. I'd forgotten that I was the M.C. for my middle school talent show. When I was 14, I wrote that I wanted to be either a reporter or a zoologist. And guess what I became after college? A newspaper reporter. A poem I wrote in 3rd grade blows my mind even now.
The most shocking discovery was an academic award for math.
I often hang my hat on sucking at math.
But I didn't always completely suck at math.
I'm reminded that the narratives we tell ourselves matter, and stay with us.
We did it then, and we'll conquer this now.
Even if it's hard sometimes.
Even if it's math.
