Progressive groups plan to mobilize at Jacksonville's Town Center Friday afternoon at 4 p.m., calling for a cease-fire in Israel's war with Hamas as rush hour traffic begins.
And they also aren't happy with the elected Sheriff's decision to go to Israel at some point.
The Jacksonville Community Action Committee (JCAC) "condemns the local support that Sheriff T.K. Waters has extended to the state of Israel," the group announced Friday.
"When T.K. Waters previously visited the state of Israel, he said, 'They have the liberty to do different things in Israel that we don't have, but it was good for me to go and see and learn a lot. … We deem it shameful that our local sheriff admired a state that is currently responsible for the death of 30,000+ Palestinians. We will continue to demand justice, and we invite the community to join us in solidarity with Palestine."
The JCAC will be joined in action by the Jacksonville Palestine Solidarity Network (JPSN).
The ongoing conflict in Israel has been a point of contention in Jacksonville, like most other places, since the American ally began its response to the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks by the terror group.
In October, Waters and other local Republicans held a press conference at City Hall supporting Israel, an event counterprotested by pro-Palestinian demonstrators in a park across the street.
