#NewComicsday and it's a great day to be a comic book enthusiast! I hear all you need is love….that would be wrong. All you need is comic books. A Valentine's Day fueled High Five sponsored by the free to attend All C's Collector's Showcase April 5th- 7th. This week Marvels offers the biggest selection of titles with Gang War taking the lead. DC shows the fans some Bizarro love and plenty of Bat titles while Image gives us a great mix of trades and closing out some stories, so with no further delay we've got five stacked high ready to fly:
Transformers #5> Starscream revives one of the most powerful Decepticons to eliminate the Autobots once and for all. (S) Daniel Warren (A) Daniel Warren, Mike Spicer
Smurfs Take> Absolute gold! I never thought I would say those words directed at a Transformers comic but here we are. I know you may have doubts, and Transformers might not be your thing but if you're not reading this title you are missing out on some impressive writing and something you would never expect from a Transformers title. Heart!
Creepshow: Joe Hills Wolverton Station #1> Master of Horror JOE HILL (Locke & Key, NOS4A2) joins CREEPSHOW!
Gather round, kiddies, for a special presentation!
In this feature-length issue, CREEPSHOW alum JOE HILL is joined by JASON CIARAMELLA (C is for Cthulu) and MICHAEL WALSH (The Silver Coin) to tell the terrifying tale of a businessman whose commute is about to get a lot hairier when his train makes an unexpected stop at "Wolverton Station"!
This one-shot adapts the acclaimed short story by JOE HILL in an expanded format with new twists and turns…including a special appearance by The Creep! (S) Joe Hill (A) Michael Walsh
Smurfs Take> Horror powerhouse Joe Hill comes to Creepshow! It's a dream come true! This title had already made the gold standard in my mind with the stories they delivered over the past year. Now there're just showing off by adding Joe Hill to the mix and expanding on this already great story.
Wolverine #43> SABRETOOTH WAR - PART 3! SABRETOOTH and WOLVERINE once worked together - and killed together! But how do the violent missions of their TEAM X days factor into the SABRETOOTH WAR being waged in the present? (S) Benjamin Percy, Victor Lavalle (A) Geoffrey Shaw
Smurfs Take> I'm just as surprised as you are this made the top 5. All of the X-Nonsense aside the last couple of issues have been a great albeit a bit gruesome story that feels and reads like a classic Wolvie story. They have amped the story by a factor of ten and I can't look away and to be honest I don't want to. Sure, they've taken out a few filler characters which is expected but there's been some surprise kills and now I'm eager to see more and who's next. A calculating Sabretooth is dangerous especially with an army behind him, all the feels of the classic Wolverine issue ten story and more.
Batman #143> THE JOKER YEAR ONE – Part Two/strong:
A mysterious figure from Batman's past has come into Joker's orbit, changing the Clown Prince of Crime forever! And what secrets does the re-formed Red Hood Gang have for Batman's future? (S) Chip Zdarsky (A) Giuseppe Camuncoli, Stefano Nesi, Andrea Sorrentino
Smurfs Take> I like many fans am torn on this story line. Is the Jokers history better left in mystery or officially sorted out? If done well, can be a powerful story that grips the reader but if not….well we've seen how that can go. I was happy with my Joker being a crazed unknown quantity capable of anything and to lend a form of motivation to him could be disastrous. The first part of the story was good, working out a few of the myths so now we get to the heart of it.
Green Lantern #8> HOPE NO MORE – Part One
After the revelations of what happened on Korugar, Hal discovers the United Planets are consolidating power in the universe by nefarious means, but before he can stop them, representatives of the United Planets Corps have arrived to arrest Hal for unlawful use of emotional spectrum energy in a quarantined zone! (S) Jeremy Adams, Ron Marz (A) Xermanico, Dale Eaglesham
Smurfs Take> I thought as a long tie GL fan I was not going to like this story and would hate Hal being confined to Earth. Well…I couldn't have been more wrong and we still haven't even got to the juicy bits of the story yet. Don't get me wrong, there's been some of the classic cheese factor with Hal but to be honest nothing outside of what you would expect from his character. Some questions answered but not enough but it looks like the biggest one is about to finally happen.
