A sweet friend gave me some sourdough starter and a short lesson on how to keep it alive! I found it fascinating that I might could keep it alive and take care of it! I don't do well with houseplants, and this is similar, so I was concerned!
I wound up putting a category on my habit tracker for sourdough, to be sure I tended it each day. I also did research for tips on keeping it going, but also to find recipes in which to use it. If I'm motivated to keep it alive, I'll be more diligent. What's more motivating than good food? =}
I did come across a need for this sourdough about a week in. I kept thinking there was a way to cover the jar with something washable, like something made of fabric. I had an aha moment when I saw another sourdough lady with a bowl cover. Couldn't I just make a cover for the jar that was sort of the same as a bowl cover? It would keep the sourdough covered and still let it breath!
After some research on the web, I drafted my own pattern using the right size circle for a wide mouth jar. I dug through my notions and found leftover elastic from mask making. I pulled out my cute little Featherweight sewing machine. To my horror, I found that my sewing machine had dust on it! I hadn't sewn in long enough to accumulate dust on my machine. I don't have a particularly dusty house, either! I sewed one as a test, and then used my pattern to make three more!
It's a great feeling of frugal accomplishment when I can take things I already have on hand (fabric, elastic, and thread) and make them into something I need! I made two sets of these so that I could give one to the friend who got me hooked on sourdough starter! I also love a quick win, which these were. I finished both sets in an afternoon of sewing! I'm considering making a proofing bowl cover as well, now that I need to make sourdough bread!
I hope you've been able to meet a need with your sewing lately, Actually, I just wish you time to sew! Happy Friday!
