Ways to Save Money on Groceries:
My adult daughter asked me if it was still possible to spend 50 dollars a week. Honestly, I think that new set point is 75 dollars a week. However, there are ways to reduce your grocery bills. Meatless meals and 1 soup meal can bring the weekly bill down. Reverse meal planning is key. Write down what you have in the house and shop to the list.
Shop at discount, bulk stores, farmer's markets. Scour flyers for lost leaders and clearance section.
Buy generic brands.
I shop in the middle of the week. Our local Walmart has a lot of clearance on Wednesday. I know that Safeway has marked down chicken after 8 p.m.
We use a cashback credit card for groceries. Sign up for grocery rewards cards.
I stick to a grocery list unless I find a crazy deal that makes it inexpensive to make our favorite dishes. For example, I found mushrooms on sale for .29 cent for a large package. I made mushroom stroganoff. I bought 15 packages. I also made several meals of lentil meatballs.
We all have meatless meals we have enjoyed. Pasta dishes, pizza, egg dishes, corn chowder to name a few. Corn chowder and grilled cheese sandwiches.
Grocery money is for grocery. Not pet food, or health and beauty.
Meal plan and stick to it. We have all been tempted to order out when tired or ill.
Double dinner recipes so you have leftovers for lunch.
You can double the amount of ground beef if you add a cup of brown lentils.
Serve simple meals based on whole foods. My family likes smaller servings of meat as long as I make plenty of sizes. For example, I can serve everyone 1 piece of chicken with salsa, black beans, rice, and a salad.
You can serve breakfast for dinner. Quiche. Pancakes with fruit and yogurt.
Make meals for the freezer when you have a few extra dollars.
Order curbside pickup
Show in season. In March, we all know cabbage will be on sale. A large cabbage will make cabbage rolls, coleslaw, a stir fry, and eggrolls.
Don't focus on eye level items. Look above and below.
Grow herbs and vegetables to save.
Learn to grind meat. I have ground an entire turkeys.
During farmer's market season, shop at the end of the day. I have come home with baskets of produce for very little.
Avoid packaged salads, which is a good idea with all the salad recalls. I keep nuts and other goodies to dress up salads.
