St. Patrick was a good and holy man. He followed the laws of God, he treated people with compassion, but also boldly preached the Truth to pagans. And, I can guarantee you, he would't like the modern day "tradition" of drinking yourself into oblivion on his feast day. Before you take one drink, consider actually learning about who St. Patrick really was. This is a good book to read: "St. Patrick, Apostle of Ireland," by John MacNeill.
Give that book a read before you decide to drink yourself into a stupor "in honor" of St. Patrick. He was a man of conviction, a man with solid self control, and a man on fire with love for The Holy Trinity. If you really want to honor St. Patrick, get yourself to confession and Mass today and then pray this beautiful prayer, penned by the great saint, himself
St Patrick's Breastplate #2
Christ be with me, Christ within me
Christ behind me, Christ before me
Christ beside me, Christ to win me
Christ to comfort me and restore me.
Christ beneath me, Christ above me
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger
Christ in hearts of all that love me
Christ in mouth of friend or stranger.
And that's the way to celebrate this feast day of the great Irish Saint, who converted all of Ireland, by his love of God, and his love of the Irish people!
