The current storyline in the Dick Tracy comic strip explains how Little Orphan Annie became an orphan in the first place.
The current Tracy creative team of Mike Curtis and Charles Ettinger revealed on March 9 that Annie's parents were Harold and Winifred Gray, a pair of FBI agents.
Despite Annie's birth (as depicted in a flashback sequence on March 20), the couple pursue a case to prevent the kidnapping of Daddy Warbucks. Annie's parents leave her at an orphanage in the March 25 strip, intending to get the baby back later.
In real life, the Little Orphan Annie comic strip was created by Harold Gray and debuted in 1924. The real-life Harold Gray died in 1968. Others continued the strip until it ended in 2010. (A detailed history can be found on Wikipedia.) During the strip's run, there were adaptations in other media, including movies in 1932, 1938, and a 1982 film titled only "Annie" in 1982.
Since then, characters from Little Orphan Annie have appeared in the Dick Tracy strip, which started in 1931 by Chester Gould. Tracy's creator ran that strip until the end of 1977. Various writers and artists have carried on with Tracy's adventures since.
Blog reader Delmo Walters Jr. reminded me this week this story evokes a late 1960s Spider-Man story. Peter Parker discovers his parents were SHIELD agents.
