When our youngest was little, she picked up an endearing way, after telling us something that she thought was obvious, of then asking us, "Don't you know?" Like, "silly people, you should know this!"
I was reminded of this when I read the same question in 1 Corinthians 3:16: Don't you know [I wanted to add "silly people!"] that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst? Turns out God asks that question a lot. And when you read all the places where he says them together, they tell a story, a story with a definite message.
Do you not know? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood since the earth was founded? He sits enthroned above the circle of the earth, and its people are like grasshoppers. Isaiah 40:21-22
Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. Isaiah 40:28
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. Isaiah 43:19
Jesus answered: "Don't you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? John 14:9
Don't you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? Romans 6:16
Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in your midst? 1 Corinthians 3:16
Don't you know that a little yeast leavens the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 1 Corinthians 5:6-7
Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? 1 Corinthians 6:15
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 1 Corinthians 9:24
Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Do you not know yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you are disqualified. 2 Corinthians 13:5 (NKJV)
Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? James 4:4 (ESV)
Don't you know? (Silly people!)
