One of the biggest privileges of my life is being a mother to my two. And maybe a close second is being able to hold my children. Snuggling has always been my favourite time of day- at any time of day- and the early hours of this morning was no different. He has been coughing and hacking for 3 days now. Asthma comes without warning and settles in like a poorly mannered guest- taking up space and making their host very uncomfortable.
Having been away for a couple of days, I have been pining, knowing my little one has been ill. It was still dark outside when I heard him pad into the bedroom and up to my ear. I could hear the rasping- its been worse- but that doesnt make the bad any better.
Mum, are you awake?
I half-sleep walk him back to his bed, find the inhaler, drop the cap, have him take the required two puffs, pick up the cap, pass him his water and lay him down again. Instinctively, I lay down next to him.
It will be ok, love. Mama's here.
He snuggled right into me and I rubbed his back, willing the coughing away. It wasn't long before I felt him fall asleep, his breathing more regular and less wheezy. I fell back to sleep too, maybe the best 45 minutes of the night.
