I recently finished a commission quilt for a baby girl! Now, I'm wanting to make a few different kinds of things, with different skills. I hope these will turn out well, but I'm not under any illusions that I'll be good at them instantly!
The first thing I want to make it a cotton half-slip. Eventually I will make a cotton skirt to go over it, but for now, I'm in need of a lightweight, pretty slip. I found one recently on a site I frequent, and it was 68 dollars. For a cotton skirt with an elastic waist! Sure, it was pretty and had insertion lace at the bottom edge with pin tucking. But I know how to do those things!
I promptly found some very pale pink cotton and before I knew it, my purchase was in the mailbox! I'm drafting my own pattern based on my measurements and giving myself extra length to pin tuck and insert lace to my heart's content. I may add a ruffle when I get to the hem seam! I'm using some new books and some older ones for help with this project!
I'm taking notes as I go, and hopefully I'll be able to recreate it with a white cotton as well. When summer comes along, I'll have a skirt and few slips that aren't going to cause me to be warmer than I already get in the middle of a Southern summer! Historically, light layers were the way to go in the South, so I'm going to try it! It's gotta be better than sticky polyester! Last year, I enjoyed the coolness of my linen "meadow skirt", a pattern by the Australian company Twig and Tale. Linen really is a dream to wear in warmer months!
My other brand-new hobby is watercolor painting. I ordered the materials online and they have arrived. Now to open it all like a present and get started! I don't think it will coordinate well with sewing, at least not on the same desk! Between pale pink cotton and my finished commission quilt, I think I'll wait for a better surface to paint on than my sewing table!
Are you doing something new? Have you ever made something for yourself that you thought was overpriced elsewhere? I wish you great success in your sewing journey. Happy Friday!
Stacy
