Daily writing prompt
What tattoo do you want and where would you put it?
I've always been fascinated by nearly all forms of art. Tattoos are naturally, then, intriguing. When I was going through a very difficult time in life, a middle school student of mine with aspirations of inking people for a living designed a tattoo for me. It was a sweet gesture and I'm sure I still have that scrap of paper tucked away in one of my "treasure" boxes from my teaching days. More on that in a moment.
I often still hear an argument from people that God is anti-tattoo (it's 2024. How is this still a thing?). This belief is situated in a section of scripture about not eating lizards and a number of other rules. As I understand it from my studies, this was written to a very specific group of people.
I've seen a number of amazing religious tattoos that start evangelistic conversations. There are some that are reminders of trials overcome with God, His goodness displayed as a reminder to both the tattooed and those who see the art.
But the most compelling argument for tattoos is that God has them. The Bible says the names of God's children are written on the palm of his hands. He also has a tat on his thigh. God is Heavenly inked!
For more specifics on whether Christians can get tattoos, I love Chris Pennington's thoughtful deep (though quick read) dive into the subject in his article, "What Does the Bible Say About Tattoos," for Crossroads Church.
So if I got a tattoo what would I get and where would it be? I think I would use the design that young man made for me and if I can find his tattoo shop, I'll let him ink it in. It's a butterfly flying with music coming out of the wings on a music staff with the first notes of the chorus of my song, "No More Chains." Sometimes I need a reminder of what God has brought me through and that he continues to carry me on his wind and will, that he is transforming me daily.
I still can't quite commit to a permanent drawing on my freckled canvas. Maybe someday. What do you think about tattoos? Do you have a meaningful one? Are you in the anti-tattoo category? Tell me more.
