Yesterday was the beginning of my 77th year. I don't take it for granted, but truth be told, I sometimes live as though I do. A friend posted something on Facebook this morning that tugged at my heartstrings. I had been reading the "news" on Facebook and going from that to the posting Mike shared was like a breath of fresh air.
Mike Wright and I go back many years. We previously were colleagues and friends at work. Thankfully, through Facebook, we periodically have opportunities to connect. This morning, Mike shared something written by Eric Owino.
I found the article figuratively a Godsend and source of gentle redirection. Owino wrote:
"As the world fights to figure everything out, l'll be holding doors for strangers, letting people cut in front of me in traffic, saying good morning, keeping babies entertained in grocery lines, stopping to talk to someone who is lonely, tipping generously, waving at police, sharing food, giving children a thumbs-up, being patient with sales clerks, smiling at passersby, and buying a stranger a cup of coffee. WHY? Because I will not stand to live in a world where love is invisible. Join me in showing kindness,
understanding, and judging less. Be kind to a stranger, give grace to friends who are having a bad day, be forgiving with yourself. If you can't find kindness, BE Kindness."
I responded to Mike: "I will share that journey with you."
Speaking of kindness, the birthday wishes for me that many of your shared on Facebook yesterday was like a balm in Gilead. You folks are amazingly kind! Thank you.
The General and I met three former neighbors who are long-term friends for breakfast this morning at The Chess Club in Blanco. During the conversation, I shared that the General is driving me to Brady (104 miles) to renew my driver's license on Wednesday.
Wayman, whose birthday is two days before mine said: "I need to look and see when my driver's license expires." To his surprise, his driver's license expired on 03/13/2024. The General subsequently got online after we returned home and found that DPS in Brady had an open appointment fifteen minutes after mine. Consequently, Wayman is taking a road trip with us on Wednesday.
I am a little anxious that I may come up short in having the information needed to renew my license. If so, you'll probably see my name in print in the Brady Standard Herald Newspaper. One of the requirements for renewing your driver's license is to substantiate current registration for all vehicles that you own. Historically, once I put the registration sticker on the vehicle, I trash the paperwork.
I have taken pictures of the registration stickers and the license plate number for each of our vehicles. Seriously, how much proof does a person need? I think it would be hard for DPS to dispute I don't have current registrations when I show them pictures. On the off-side chance that I'm wrong, I will attempt to coax the General to drive me by the county tax office and see if they can provide written documentation.
It shouldn't be this hard to be a licensed driver in Texas!
All My Best!
Don
