Playing Ball with Wynne Leon and Dr. Victoria Ponders
It's a pitch, alright, but not one you can bat out of the park.
Wynne and Vicki put me on the mound, so to speak, and asked for a live pitch of the new book Larry and I are writing in tandem. Please don't ask how it's going.
Okay, it's like dragging a dead body across the Mojave desert and backing into a cactus. I think that's as detailed as we need to be. We're making progress, but it's painfully slow, and like the Oakland A's, we're a long way from Las Vegas.
So I threw it out there, put my entire body into it, and they recorded the play, so there's no denying it now. I tried to condense the pitch down to a few sentences, I really did, but you know me. I like my words. I hope you do, too.
The thing I learned about elevator pitches is they matter significantly.
You will need one, whether you've published a book or it's incubating in the womb, because inevitably, someone will ask you what the book is about, and you want to miss an opportunity to sell your book or pitch your idea.
The pitch becomes your roadmap for writing, driving sales, and stirring up interest.
I realize the process is daunting, and the possibility of striking out is always there, but you still need to take a swing at it. I'd love to hear your thoughts on pitches, books, and podcasts. Hey, toss one out there of your own.
As Vicki says, "It's time to rally the team! We listen intently to our colleagues – fellow writers as they hone their messages, enticing us with intrigue."
And that is just what I did with Wynne and Vicki!
Give it a listen; come along with me as I stumble through my first Writer's Conference and learn how to navigate the process while dealing with the royalty.
I didn't hold back a single thought. I know I should, but it's not my style. Enjoy!
