Some people call dogs man's best friend, and while this is certainly not true for every dog and for every breed, there are some dogs who embody this sentiment completely. Our friends' Australian Shepherd, Cooper, who sadly passed away yesterday, was like this.
Cooper was a happy, playful, patient dog who was literally everybody's friend. In our small country vacation homes community, he was certainly among the, if not _the_ best liked individual.
He always looked out for everyone, tirelessly circling the whole compound, content to be petted, thrown his toys, play with the kids, and proudly carrying around every stick he could find. Cooper was probably happiest if there was water involved, be it lake, pond, or garden hose. Only last week, I saw him joyfully chasing the jets from the hose while playing with our friends' daughter.
On Wednesday, he collapsed at the park, out of the blue, and despite feeling a little better after having had a fortifying IV at the vet's, things went downhill from there. His family took him to the country, where he got alarmingly bad yesterday, struggling to stand, or breathe. He died in the car on the way back to the city.
His funeral is taking place as I write this, and the community is gathering to put him to his final rest. Sadly, we can't be there with his family, whom we stand with in spirit in this sad hour. May he go to Dog Heaven, may his beautiful soul rest in peace in a well loved spot. He was our friend, too, and we will not forget him. He was a Good Boy.
