Last week, I shared that I had rescued a Singer Featherweight at a yard sale. The reason it was for sale at an affordable price was because it was not working. It was a glorified paperweight when I bought it, so I'm thankful to have found it!
The truth is, I had nowhere to test the machine before buying it. However, I knew I had a Centennial model Featherweight at home that may one day need parts to fix it. I knew I would recoup my investment one way or another.
However, I wanted to give the 46 a chance to run properly first before relegating it to the parts bin. I did some troubleshooting of several different reasons why the machine did not sew and found the culprit. I also took all the old thread off the bobbin because it looked ancient! Thread can rot over time, so it needed to be rewound with new Aurifil, which is what my Centennial machine prefers.
I went on to do a full service for the little 46, getting it just right for my favorite sewing, patchwork. It needs to be able to chain piece, and respond quickly, but also run reliably. It's ready now for the many sewing adventures I'll have. I love these machines because they are small, lightweight, and sew a pretty straight seam.
The 46 will go with me to guild meetings and sew days. My Centennial model sits on my writing desk at home and is used whenever the urge to sew strikes! Both will serve me well, and I'm so grateful for the chance to learn how to service these wonderful little machines. They have such a lovely history. I'm sure I'll enjoy working on these in the future!
I pray you have something engaging and creative to do to serve the Lord. I pray that He gives you good fortune and wisdom for what you may need during yard sale season! Happy Sewing!
