Happy Friday! This week's topic is a good one! It's late spring here in the Southern United States. That means it's yard sale season!
Yard sale, tag sale, or garage sale, whatever you call it, these can be a treasure trove for things you may be looking for in your home! The prices are better than thrift stores and consignment stores, but the inventory can be hit or miss. It's best to go to these types of sales with a somewhat open mind, a list of things you need for the home, and the strong ability to walk away if there's not anything that you need!
One of my favorite yard sale finds was from a neighbor who was moving across the country to be with her children. She sold me an entire set of silverware that matched my own set for ten dollars. I could not have found a matching set for that price anywhere else-they're vintage now! At the time we had teenagers who were constantly running off with my silverware, and we would often run low on forks. Thankfully, I have enough for company now!
Over the past weekend, our neighborhood also had a community yard sale. The participants were all gathered together in a parking lot close by and had tables and tables of fun things! I found a Singer Featherweight sewing machine, and Doc found a stack of good books. The sewing machine is dated just after World War II, and it runs like a top now that I've tinkered with it. You see it here with a stitch plate missing, simply because I'm oiling it well here. I've ordered some sewing machine grease and a manual, just as a treat. The gears need grease, and I'd love to know more about troubleshooting the little machines.
I have to say, patience is the key with yard sales. Patience and a keen eye for what you may need. We've had the best luck within our own community, but I've had my eye out for a featherweight for many years. Because I know a little about them, I know what I'm looking for. It helps to do a little research before stepping out of the door. Armed with a little knowledge about an item, you can spot the deal or the almost deal!
I'm wishing you good hunting as you visit yard sales and thrift shops. I do believe God uses these to meet our needs and sometimes our wants!
